Meet Damaris: A Mentor's Journey of Transformation into Leadership!
✨ At Minds Matter Houston, we believe mentorship isn't just about guiding students to college – it's a powerful, two-way journey of mutual growth and profound transformation for everyone involved! ✨
Damaris is a vibrant testament to this philosophy. After successfully guiding Ariela through her senior year, she's now stepping into an exciting new leadership capacity as our Sophomore Pod Lead. This transition isn't just a new title; it's a direct reflection of our commitment to identifying talent within our dedicated volunteer base and nurturing their growth into vital leadership roles.
Damaris joined us as a volunteer mentor in July 2024, immediately impressing us with her dedication and insights. As an Account Executive at Johnson & Johnson MedTech and a proud Arizona State University alumna (B.S.), she brings a wealth of professional experience. Her pre-corporate career as a Community Health Promoter with the Peace Corps in Guyana further showcases her deep commitment to service and community. Our students even had the privilege of hearing her practical wisdom firsthand when she spoke on our recent healthcare career panel!
Her journey from a dedicated mentor, deeply invested in Ariela's success, to a leader overseeing an entire sophomore pod, perfectly embodies how Minds Matter empowers its volunteers. We provide not just opportunities to serve, but a platform for individuals like Damaris to develop their own leadership skills, expand their impact, and grow personally and professionally right here within our organization. Her advice, "If you're fluent in Spanish, make sure the hiring manager knows. And practice technical writing in Spanish!" speaks volumes about the real-world, actionable wisdom our mentors share, cultivated through their diverse experiences and our program.
