The Blueprint for What’s Next: Inside the Spring Semester Curriculum
This Spring semester has been a season of significant growth and preparation for all three classes at Minds Matter Houston. From mastering standardized tests to navigating the complexities of college applications and professional branding, our students have balanced rigorous AM Academic sessions with transformative PM Mentoring workshops.
Sophomores: Building a Foundation for Success
The Class of 2028 spent their first Spring semester focusing on self-discovery and the technical skills needed for the years ahead.
AM Academics: Sophomores rotated between writing and SAT prep sessions. In late Spring, they transitioned into creating their “College Readiness Profiles”, providing a roadmap for their upcoming Junior year.
PM Mentoring: The afternoon sessions were highly interactive, beginning with a focus on the creation of "Your Personal Brand". Students also spent considerable time on Summer Program workdays, where they researched opportunities and prepared for their upcoming summer experiences. Other key workshops included SMART WOOP Goals and an introduction to finding their "Best Fit" colleges through the Overgrad platform.
Juniors: Navigating the Road to College
For the Class of 2027, the Spring semester was a high-stakes period of college research and standardized testing.
AM Academics: Juniors prioritized SAT prep, with additional sessions dedicated to writing to assist with early admission program essay drafts.
PM Mentoring: The Mentoring hour was packed with practical application skills. Students received an Introduction to the Common App and Apply Texas to jumpstart their senior year applications. They also engaged in a deep dive into "Finding the Best Fit," using the National curriculum to refine their college application shortlists. To sharpen their presentation skills, Juniors completed a series of public speaking workshops, culminating in presentations on their chosen career paths or Summer Program.
Seniors: Finalizing the Vision
The Class of 2026 focused on the transition to postsecondary education and the culmination of their three-year journey.
AM Academics: The core of the Senior morning was the Senior Capstone Project. Students moved through structured modules including "Know Your Audience," "Evaluating Sources," "Framing an Argument," and "Storytelling" to prepare for their final presentations.
PM Mentoring: Afternoon sessions centered on Practical College Skills and life after graduation. Key topics included “Financial Literacy”, specifically avoiding debt and understanding financial aid, “Decision Making and Trade-offs” to guide personal time and resource management, and "Knowing Your College Resources" on a college campus. They also explored “Professional and Personal Relationships” to ensure they are prepared for the social dynamics of university life.
Looking Ahead with Momentum
As the Spring semester draws to a close, the growth across all three classes stands as a powerful testament to what happens when ambition meets structured support. From our Sophomores laying their foundational bricks to our Seniors finalizing their leap into university life, every Saturday session has moved our scholars closer to their ultimate dreams. Armed with polished resumes, strategic college targets, and crucial life skills, our students are stepping into the summer months with unparalleled momentum. We look forward to gathering as a community for our upcoming End of Year Celebration to honor the relentless hard work of our scholars and the unwavering dedication of the mentors who guide them every step of the way. The blueprint for their future is set, and the best is yet to come.
