From Paper to Performance: Our Spring Career Series Prepares Scholars for the Professional Stage
Following the success of our March Career Panel, Minds Matter Houston (MMH) continued its spring theme of "harvesting success" with an intensive three-part workshop series. This series was meticulously designed to equip our scholars with the "cultural capital" and professional "power skills" necessary to navigate competitive college and career environments.
Mastering the Narrative: Resume Writing Workshop
On March 28, we welcomed Karina de Sousa, an HR Manager at Chevron, to lead our students through the art of professional storytelling. Moving beyond a simple list of duties, the workshop focused on an "Impact Formula" (Action Verb + What You Did + Result/Impact) to make resumes truly memorable.
A key highlight was the Identity Reflection exercise. Students were encouraged to draw out leadership skills from non-traditional roles—such as babysitting, church youth groups, or helping with a family business—and translate those experiences into professional achievements. The session also introduced scholars to LinkedIn, helping them understand how to build a digital professional footprint.
The Art of the Interview: Skills Seminar with ExxonMobil
The momentum continued on April 11 with an Interview Skills Seminar led by Brandon Moncada and a talented team of volunteers from ExxonMobil. The goal was simple: teach students how to "bring their resume to life" through confident verbal communication.
Scholars received "insider" advice on:
The STAR Method: A structured technique for answering "Show Me" questions by describing the Situation, Task, Action, and Result.
First Impressions: The importance of eye contact, a confident greeting, and mastering "Business Casual" attire.
Video Interviewing: Practical tips for testing technology and maintaining engagement in a virtual setting.
Real-World Stakes: Mock Interviews at JPMorgan Chase
The series culminated on April 18 with our high-touch Mock Interview Workshop. Hosted by Gabby Valdez and her team at JPMorgan Chase, this event provided students with an immersive, one-on-one practice environment.
Every scholar had the opportunity to deliver their "elevator pitch" and respond to high-stakes questions in a formal setting, simulating the interviews they will face during senior year college and scholarship applications. Interviewers provided immediate, personalized feedback, allowing students to refine their techniques in real-time.
Bridging the Opportunity Gap
These workshops represent the core of the Minds Matter model: providing holistic support that goes beyond academics. By the end of the series, 80% of our students reported feeling significantly more confident and prepared for professional evaluations.
We extend our deepest gratitude to our corporate partners at Chevron, ExxonMobil, and JPMorgan Chase for investing their time and expertise to fuel the bright futures of Houston’s next generation of leaders.
