Real-World Wisdom: Our Spring Career Fair Inspires Bright Futures

On March 21, 2026, Minds Matter Houston (MMH) transformed the Houston Food Bank into a vibrant hub of professional discovery for our high-achieving scholars. As a centerpiece of our spring theme, "harvesting success," this Career Panel was designed to bridge the "cultural capital" gap by providing students with a "real-world look" at diverse and high-demand career paths.

A Dynamic "Speed Dating" Format
Moving away from traditional lectures, the event utilized a rotating roundtable format. Small groups of approximately 3–4 students rotated between tables at 10–15 minute intervals, allowing for intimate, interactive, and meaningful conversations with each professional. This unique "speed dating" style ensured that every student had the opportunity to ask personalized questions about industry insights and career trajectories.

A Panoramic View of Houston Industries
We were thrilled to host a curated group of local experts who represented the diverse sectors driving Houston’s economy. Our students explored a world of possibilities through the eyes of accomplished professionals, including:

  • STEM and Engineering: Samuel De La Torre (Boeing), Garima Gupta (Aegis Aerospace/NASA), and Andres Reyes (Air Products) shared insights into technical innovation and space exploration.

  • Healthcare: Neil Wingkun, Brian Tanedo, and Jacqueline Tanedo (Houston Methodist) discussed the quick-thinking required on the frontlines of medicine.

  • Law and Corporate Strategy: Retired attorney Sue Rosenthal (ExxonMobil) provided a look into the logical complexities of legal defense.

  • Conservation: DeAndra Ramsey (Buffalo Bayou Partnership) spoke about the vital work of environmental science and animal welfare.

"Real-Talk" and Practical Advice
The discussions went far beyond simple job descriptions. Students and panelists dove into the day-to-day realities of work, the challenges of navigating higher education as a first-generation student, and even the modern impact of AI on various industries. Panelists offered candid "real-talk" advice on choosing college majors, the importance of internships, and essential "power skills" like professional communication and networking etiquette.

Building the Foundation for Success
For many of our students, this exposure is transformative. By connecting with professionals who have successfully navigated the workforce, our scholars gain the confidence and charisma needed to pursue their own ambitious dreams. As one volunteer noted during the series, seeing the dedication of these students makes it clear that for them, "the sky's the limit".

We extend a massive thank you to our incredible panelists and the team of volunteers who made this event a resounding success. Together, we are fueling the futures of Houston’s next generation of leaders.
