Investing in Potential: A Letter from the Executive Director
Dear Minds Matter Houston Community,
As we approach the end of another academic year, my heart is filled with immense gratitude for the dedicated donors and volunteers who make our mission possible. Your commitment of time and resources is the engine that drives Minds Matter Houston (MMH). This semester alone, your support has provided expert-led SAT instruction, professional writing coaching, and meals for our Saturday sessions, ensuring our students have the physical and intellectual fuel they need to succeed.
We are currently in a pivotal season of transformation. Our 5-year strategic roadmap is focused on a singular, ambitious goal: doubling our student cohort by 2030. This vision is rooted in our belief that every high-achieving student in Houston deserves a path to college, regardless of their zip code. By professionalizing our leadership and expanding our mentor base, we are building a sustainable foundation to support more of Houston’s future leaders than ever before.
Reflecting on the past few months, I am thrilled to share some of our biggest accomplishments from this spring:
A Historic Funding Milestone: We recently secured a significant grant from Sempra Infrastructure, the single largest gift in our chapter’s history. This transformative investment fully underwrites the costs of our Summer Programs, ensuring our students can attend prestigious pre-college experiences at universities like Yale and Rice without financial burden.
The Career Development Series: Thanks to the expertise of corporate partners like Chevron, ExxonMobil, and JP Morgan Chase, our students participated in a comprehensive professional readiness series. From crafting their first resumes to navigating mock interviews in professional attire, our mentees are now equipped with the "power skills" required for collegiate and career success.
100% College Enrollment & Academic Excellence: We continue to see the "Minds Matter Magic" in our results. I am proud to report that we have maintained a 100% college acceptance and enrollment rate for our graduating class.
Looking ahead, I am filled with hope. We are not just helping students get into college; we are setting them on a path toward lifelong financial stability so that there will never be a second-generation Minds Matter student.
I also want to extend a profound thank you to our incredible team of volunteers. You are the heartbeat of Minds Matter Houston. You are the absolute heartbeat of Minds Matter Houston. Giving up your personal time to ensure our organization thrives requires an extraordinary level of dedication, and we are deeply grateful for the diverse ways you show up for our community.
To our Saturday crew—the mentors providing one-on-one guidance and the academic instructors breaking down complex concepts—thank you for your consistent, face-to-face investment in our scholars. You are building the deep bonds of trust and social capital that give our students the confidence to step onto elite college campuses.
Equally vital is our powerful network of behind-the-scenes volunteers who work tirelessly outside of Saturdays. To those of you driving our strategic student recruitment, streamlining our day-to-day operations, and championing our development and fundraising efforts: your work is the foundation upon which everything else stands. Without your professional expertise, organizational skills, and dedication to expanding our reach, we simply could not do what we do.
Whether you are working directly with a scholar on a Saturday morning or building the infrastructure to support our growth from behind the scenes, you are a vital catalyst for change. Our growth is a direct reflection of your collective generosity, and we thank you for your unwavering dedication.
Looking ahead, I am filled with hope. We are not just helping students get into college; we are setting them on a path toward lifelong financial stability so that there will never be a second-generation Minds Matter student.
Thank you for being part of this journey. Your belief in our students' potential is changing lives, one Saturday at a time.
With deep gratitude,
Cynthia Suttle
