Driving Success
MMH Volunteers Go the Extra Mile for Sophomore Scholars
This summer, our Sophomore scholars took monumental steps toward higher education by attending premier, pre-college residential camps across Texas. Thanks to our historic partnership with Sempra Infrastructure, which fully funds these programs, our high-achieving sophomores experienced university life firsthand at celebrated schools like Rice University and the University of Houston—with half of our sophomore cohort heading to Baylor University in Waco.
However, when transportation barriers threatened to keep these scholars from attending, the Minds Matter Houston family didn't hesitate. Our incredible team stepped up: twelve dedicated volunteers committed to six round-trip drives over three separate weekends to handle drop-offs and pick-ups, ensuring that zero barriers stood between our scholars and their futures.
A Firsthand Look: Katie’s "College Dress Rehearsal" at Baylor
For our sophomores, these week-long camps serve as their very first "college dress rehearsal". Living in residential dorms, navigating a collegiate campus, and discovering new fields of study helps demystify higher education and build lasting independence.
To see the direct impact of this community effort, we caught up with Sophomore Katie, who spent her summer living on campus and exploring sports management. For Katie, the experience was a transformative introduction to the collegiate routine:
“My favorite first experience on campus this summer was getting to have a FULL day of a set schedule and really understand what college is like.”
In the classroom, Katie tackled complex, collegiate-level subjects that opened her eyes to new career horizons. She dove deep into the sports industry, learning lessons with profound real-world stakes:
“One eye opening thing I learned this summer was the effects and consequences of ignoring or not treating concussions which can lead to CTE, this has taken and ruined the lives of many pro sports players.”
Returning to Houston, Katie is entering her junior year with a completely transformed outlook and a strong sense of preparedness for what lies ahead:
“To enter Junior year with a new mindset and a much clearer goal of my future in college makes me feel more ready and prepared. This experience has shaped my future goals by actually experiencing a snippet of what it's like to coexist with a roommate.”
The "First Practice" Run: Why We Need Your Hands and Heart
Katie's growth is a testament to what happens when we invest in student potential. But these life-changing summer sendoffs do not happen by accident. Long before our sophomores set foot on a college campus, they complete a full "practice run" of the college application and financial aid process with their mentors.
Because Minds Matter Houston is a 100% volunteer-led and volunteer-run nonprofit organization, our Saturday mentors manage every single piece of this intensive coordination. Working side-by-side with our sophomores, volunteers help students select their summer programs, draft personal statements, track application deadlines, and submit financial aid and tuition paperwork.
This high-touch, individual support is highly rewarding, but it requires a village. To scale our impact and welcome our newly recruited sophomore Class of 2029, we need more local professionals to step into mentoring roles.
