Tackling College 101: The Sophomore Program
In the Saturday Sessions, each class has their own specific curriculum curated to teach essential skills and enrich each student’s life. For all classes, Saturday is divided into two parts: morning academic tutoring, and afternoon 1:1 mentoring and individual skill development. The latter is focused into 4 main skill blocks: communication, applications, personal growth, and college & career readiness.
A core component of all three classes’ academic sessions is SAT preparation, which involves tutorials in math, writing, logic and critical thinking. Students follow a dedicated, class-based curriculum that is intended to help them face the SAT examination with confidence and raise their scores.
Academics: Class of 2028
Sophomores begin their Minds Matter journey in the fall with academic focus on practical and application writing skills. Topics covered include: grammar, essay structure for applications, drafting personal statements, communication styles, and how to build a resumé. In the spring, there are breaks from the writing curriculum to include SAT preparation sessions.
Mentorship: Class of 2028
To introduce them to the mentorship experience, Sophomores cover a wide variety of introductory topics focused on personal development, discovering Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), summer program applications, and presentation skills.
Communication Skills: Preparing for Presentations and Interviews
Application Skills: Intro to Applications and Summer Program
Personal Growth: Time Management, Exploring Personal Growth
College & Career Readiness: Exploring Careers, College Considerations, and Career Panel Discussions
A key component of the Sophomore experience is laying the foundation for their mentor relationships. Students say that their sessions are fun, and allow them to build strong connections with their MMH cohorts and session leaders. They really appreciate the genuine interest their mentors take in their lives and look forward to their coming years with MMH!
