Reflections from the Helm: A Letter from Your Executive Director

Dear Minds Matter Houston Family,

As the familiar humidity of summer settles in and we close another remarkable semester, my heart is brimming with a mix of profound gratitude and a touch of bittersweet nostalgia. This spring marks not only the end of a successful academic period but also the conclusion of my journey as the Executive Director of Minds Matter Houston.

When I joined Minds Matter Houston, I knew I was saying yes to a powerful mission - one that helps driven, high-achieving students from low-income backgrounds unlock their full potential through mentorship, academic support, and summer programs. What I didn’t know was just how much I would be transformed in the process. I began on the Saturday Programs team, later served as the Summer Programs Director, and ultimately stepped into the Executive Director role right as we emerged from the challenging days of COVID in 2022. Every step has been a privilege. What we have built together since then is nothing short of extraordinary. The growth we've experienced, the lives we've touched, and the community we've cultivated are a testament to our collective dedication.

I often find myself reminiscing about the early days of the Class of 2025. I vividly remember taking part in their selection, seeing the raw potential and unwavering determination in their eyes. We shared so much with that cohort, from their initial sessions at Yes Prep Fifth Ward, a place that provided invaluable early support, to finding our more permanent and welcoming home at the Houston Food Bank. Watching them grow, adapt, and flourish through every challenge and triumph has been one of the greatest joys of my tenure.

Jenn with the Class of 2025 back in 2023!

This semester, as always, has been a testament to the resilience and ambition of our students, and the unwavering commitment of our volunteers. We've highlighted so much of their incredible work through our recent newsletters and social media posts. Perhaps you've seen the glimpses into our typical Minds Matter sessions, or read the inspiring snippets from our alumni. These stories, these invitations, are the heartbeat of who we are.

My pride extends beyond just our students' college acceptances and scholarships. It swells when I see our dedicated mentors stepping into new leadership roles within our class pods and committees. Their growth mirrors the growth of our organization, creating a sustainable legacy of mentorship, community, and support.

As I prepare to pass the torch, I do so with absolute confidence in Minds Matter Houston's future. The mission that brought me here years ago remains as vital as ever, and the passion within this team is a powerful reminder of what's possible when we invest in our youth.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for being a part of this incredible journey. I look forward to cheering on Minds Matter Houston from a new perspective, always as a proud member of this family.

With deepest gratitude,

Jenn Yao
